Know about Grado Labs GS300e

Grado Labs GS3000e got 5/5 all star rating on What’s Hi-Fi (Review):

The Grado GS3000es need a listening room. That sounds like an odd thing to say about a pair of headphones, but get a pair and that’s exactly what you’ll wish for. The GS3000es are an open-backed design. They not only leak out lots of sound but they let in everything too. Voices, traffic noises, kettles boiling, you name it – all will intrude on your listening experience to varying degrees. During testing, it isn’t long before we see the look of disapproval from anyone sitting near us, once the high-frequency ’tiss-tiss’ emanating from the rear of the headphones starts getting on their nerves. The solution? Go to a quiet space, away from anyone likely to disturb or be disturbed. A dedicated listening room, for instance.

Step 1. Know about the components

  • 2 X original Grado GS3000e drivers, fine tuned in the original sound character.
  • 2 X Mahogany wood cups, preinstalled with cup holders (brackets)

Step 2. Wiring

As shown in the pic below, the cable is red/blue labeled. You’ll need to push it through the 4mm hole on the cup.

Step 3. Soldering

Solder the wires to the soldering panel on the driver. Note:

  • The right-hand side pin is positive. Make sure you make it right.
  • Solder it as quick as possible (<3s). The soldering panel is very fragile and easily broken when heating for long period.

Step 4. Gluing

Apply some instant glue at the edge of the drivers (be careful not to get glue on to the front cover), and push the driver into the cup. Wait >1h or longer until the glue fully dry.

Step 5. Install the headband

You can apply a little bit glue inside the small black cups on the stick, to make them stay more stable.

Step 5. Put on earpad, and enjoy them!

You can try S/L/G cushions and see which one fits you the best.

Headband options

We provide both upgrade and cost-effective options for DIYers than the default one (genuine leather in black). Note all headband are of same Grado lockers and stainless band. The only difference is the building materials of the leather.

Use this kit with other drivers and how to select

Headphone drivers is the most critical component on sound reproduction and account for 95% of the sound character and quality. We recommend DIYers to spend major budget on getting hi-end, market approved drivers.

This kit works with all 40-50mm headphone drivers on the market. While in order to get the best performance from the genuine wood and open back design, we fine tune and recommend following ones per your use scenario and budget:

  • B&W P7 – our flagship and mostly recommended
  • Master & Dynamics MW60 – sound the most closely to typical Grado headphones, bright and massively of details
  • Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Aero – Premium gaming experience like locating, imaging, clear team communication, and sound effecting
  • Grado compatible driver – a V-curve driver and physically compatible with general Grado housing.  It offers a very clear, punchy bass.
  • Skull Candy Avitor – decent sound with the best budget and superbass
  • Meze 99 classic – big sound stage and perfect dynamic range, and best for classical orchestral music, like symphonies.
  • AKG 701 style Titanium diaphragm – if you are looking for a U-curve headphone with strong bass and high resolution

This is a really good kit and we highly recommend to DIYers.

  2. artroy (verified owner)

I ordered the GS3000E, pre-assembled. The sound quality is outstanding. I have about 80 – 90 hours of listening. The sound has continued to get better each time I put them on. I have not heard the original Grado GS3000E yet but if they sound better than these that would be incredible. I have a pair of Grado SR80E’s and they do not come close to how good these sound. I also have a pair of Sennheiser HD6xx and Audeze LCD-2 classics and the GS3000’s from earphonediylabs sound better than both. I am running them through a Schiit Bifrost multi-bit dac with unison upgrade and a Lyr amp with 6H23n-eb tubes. These are without a doubt my new go to headphones. I would highly recommend these phones to anyone. The build quality is very good. My only complaint is the cord is very short. I purchased a extension cable so really not an issue. Absolute blast to listen to for any genre of music. Go to the Grado website and read the reviews and you will know what to expect when you get them!
